Types of Dementia
It is not always
possible to achieve an accurate diagnosis and some people may show signs
of more than one kind of dementia. However, the proportion of those with
each different type of dementia can roughly be broken down as follows:

The Ageing Population
- QUEEN'S TELEGRAMS
- in 1952, when she came to the throne, the queen sent 273 birthday
telegrams to centenarians. Now that figure is over 3000 per year. (Quoted
by Harry Cayton in 'Alzheimer's - Looking Ahead in the 21st Century'
from personal correspondence, Buckingham Palace, January 2000)
-
In 1999, the
total UK population was 59,501,000. 18% (10.7 million) were over pensionable
age. (Age Concern
- Older People in the United Kingdom Factsheet, available on their
web site)
-
This is expected
to rise to 11.9 million in 2011 and 12.2 million by 2021.(Age
Concern - Older People in the United Kingdom Factsheet, available
on their web
site)
-
In 2000, there
were approximately 0.4 million men and 0.9 million women in the UK
over 85. The projections for the year 2050 are 1.4 million men and
2.4 million women. (Alzheimer's
Disease International web site - US Census Bureau data)
- The total number
of people with dementia in the world was 11 million in 1980, 18 million
in 2000 and is likely to be 34 million in 2025. (Alzheimer's
Disease International web site)
The Cost To the Community of Dementia
-
The annual cost
of dementia in the UK is between £5,400 and £5,800 million.
(Bosanquet, May,
Johnson, "Alzheimer's Disease in the United Kingdom - Burden
of Disease and Future Care" 1998)
-
Of this, the
NHS and local authority pay for about 42%, the rest being borne by
the Department of Social Security or patients and their families.
(Bosanquet, May,
Johnson, "Alzheimer's Disease in the United Kingdom - Burden
of Disease and Future Care" 1998)
-
The direct cost
of younger people with dementia is £132 million per year in
the UK. (Harvey
et al, 1997)
