Prevalence

  • In the world, nearly 18 million people have dementia

  • There are at least 5,000 people with dementia amongst ethnic minorities in the UK

Younger People with Dementia

  • 18,500 people under the age of 65 in the UK have dementia (The Alzheimer's Society web site)

  • the prevalence between 30 and 60 years of age is 67.2 per 100,000 (Harvey, "Young Onset Dementia: Epidemiology, clinical symptoms, family burden, support and outcome" 1998)

 

Types of Dementia

It is not always possible to achieve an accurate diagnosis and some people may show signs of more than one kind of dementia. However, the proportion of those with each different type of dementia can roughly be broken down as follows:

  • Alzheimer's disease

  • Dementia with Lewy bodies

The Ageing Population

  • QUEEN'S TELEGRAMS - in 1952, when she came to the throne, the queen sent 273 birthday telegrams to centenarians. Now that figure is over 3000 per year. (Quoted by Harry Cayton in 'Alzheimer's - Looking Ahead in the 21st Century' from personal correspondence, Buckingham Palace, January 2000)

 


  • In 1999, the total UK population was 59,501,000. 18% (10.7 million) were over pensionable age. (Age Concern - Older People in the United Kingdom Factsheet, available on their web site)

  • This is expected to rise to 11.9 million in 2011 and 12.2 million by 2021.(Age Concern - Older People in the United Kingdom Factsheet, available on their web site)

  • In 2000, there were approximately 0.4 million men and 0.9 million women in the UK over 85. The projections for the year 2050 are 1.4 million men and 2.4 million women. (Alzheimer's Disease International web site - US Census Bureau data)

 


  • By 2010 there will be about 840,000 people with dementia in the UK. This is expected to rise to over 1.5 million by 2050. (The Alzheimer's Society web site)

 


 


  • The total number of people with dementia in the world was 11 million in 1980, 18 million in 2000 and is likely to be 34 million in 2025. (Alzheimer's Disease International web site)

 

 

The Cost To the Community of Dementia

  • The annual cost of dementia in the UK is between £5,400 and £5,800 million. (Bosanquet, May, Johnson, "Alzheimer's Disease in the United Kingdom - Burden of Disease and Future Care" 1998)

  • Of this, the NHS and local authority pay for about 42%, the rest being borne by the Department of Social Security or patients and their families. (Bosanquet, May, Johnson, "Alzheimer's Disease in the United Kingdom - Burden of Disease and Future Care" 1998)

  • The direct cost of younger people with dementia is £132 million per year in the UK. (Harvey et al, 1997)
